Soroptimist International of Fukuoka-Higashi
Club
Social Volunteer Award 2002 |
| @Ms. Chikako Morita, a member of the Kyushu Marrow
Donor Registry Promotion Conference, was the winner of Soroptimist
International of Fukuoka-Higashi Clubs Social Volunteer Award 2002.
This conference is a volunteer group that explains the cooperation
and understanding about the need for a bone- marrow transplant. To
support these activities, our club held the Tami Asakura charity concert
in 2002 and contributed a part of the proceeds. |
| @Ms. Morita suggested a wonderful
new idea to expand the network of bone marrow transplants. Specifically,
she introduced the concept of a stuffed Teddy bear called "Marrow",
accompanied by a book about the bone marrow bank. "Marrow"
and the book are circulated relay style to many people. They
are invited to read and sign the book as well as become a foster
parent to another "Marrow" teddy bear by making one
bear themselves. The foster parent has to pay 2,000 yen for
the materials and the book. |

@People can find out about the
whereabouts of "Marrow" by looking at the conference's
home page. "Marrow's Solitary Journey" became a focus
of mass media attention. In
this way, it also came to our club's attention. |
